For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:8-14).
Identity seems to be more important than ever to many people. There are companies and websites that advertise regularly to help you find your ancestors and where you came from. Why do people want to know? For some it may be simple curiosity. But for others it is much more. In a world filled with broken homes and lonely people, they promise to find you a family. To people looking for a sense of belonging, they offer a history to tell you where you came from. And to people looking for approval and unsure of what should define their lives, they tell you what you should like or how you should live based on the culture of your ancestors.
What is our identity? There is really only one identity that matters. And that is the identity that Christ gave to you. He completely changed us… from darkness to light in the Lord!
What does that mean? It means we who were dead in our sins are now alive in Christ! We who were the property of Satan are now the family of God!
It is now our privilege to live as the children of light that we are. With a different identity comes a different life.
Like the Ephesians of old, we too live in a very dark place. The world has not grown less sinful. But like the Ephesians of old, we also have an opportunity. We have the opportunity to be different and show the world that we are different. We have the chance to show everyone the change God has made in our lives.
My prayer this week is the same as the Apostle Paul’s for the Ephesians: As dearly loved and forgiven people who are now light in the Lord, live as children of light. Continue to find out what pleases the Lord – He’s not shy about telling you what it is in His Word. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness. There is no point or benefit in trying to fit in with the dark and sinful world around us.
Against all odds, the Ephesian Christians were able to not only hold on to their identity, but thrive in living their identity. They made a difference in their city and grew strong enough to send out their own missionaries to other cities! The same Lord with the same power is also with us. He will give us opportunities and the strength to use them for His glory.
May God bless you as you live as children of light!
